About Tomoe River Paper:
This notebook uses Tomoe River S paper. The "S" stands for Sanzen Paper Manufacturing Co., Ltd. When Tomoegawa (the original manufacturer of Tomoe River) discontinued its production, Sanzen stepped in to fill the void with an incredible new paper inspired by the original.
Confusion exists because there were three different papers to use the name Tomoe River at the 52gsm paper weight:
- Discontinued "Original" (aka "Old") Tomoe River produced by Tomoegawa on Machine No. 7.
- Discontinued "New" Tomoe River produced by Tomoegawa on Machine No 9.
- Tomoe River "S" produced by Sanzen
Tomoegawa made two Tomoe River papers. When they shut down Machine No. 7 and moved production to Machine No. 9, they created a new paper with diminished performance. This short-lived paper was referred to as "new" Tomoe River and the paper from Machine No. 7 became known as "old" or "original."
Tomoe River S is a new paper not to be confused with the "new" or "original" Tomoe River.
Similarities to the original Tomoe River:
- Ultra thin and super light 52 gsm weight
- Phenomenal performance with fountain pen ink
- Exceptional drape
Differences from the original Tomoe River:
- Improved opacity (less ghosting) due to pulp impregnated with white pigment
- Enhanced resistance to bleeding
- Crisper surface
- Higher tensile strength (harder to tear)
- More porous paper surface
- Slightly faster dry times
- Increased feedback (still smooth)
- Less line smoothing
- Reduced line spread
- Increased performance with rollerballs
As writers, journalers, and notetakers, the biggest difference in our experience is the feel of the paper. The "original" Tomoe River is smoother and more crinkly, like onion skin paper. Tomoe River S is smooth but feels more natural. In our opinion, Tomoe River S is less polarizing and easier to use daily while maintaining (and in some cases improving upon) the performance of the original.

I have been searching for THE notebook for years and year. From Moleskine to Leuchtturm to Kickstarter campaigns that promised "innovative designs unlike the popular brands," none of those notebooks have lived up to their promise. I was very fortunate to have found The Paper Mind. I bought two Tomoe River Hardcover (Blanks) a couple of months ago and I will use no other notebooks. The combination of the classic hardcover binding and Tomoe River paper made this notebook a winner. I've always wanted something of a cross between Lechtturm and high-quality Japanese paper and The Paper Mind delivered. I highly recommend this! (Thank you so much, Blake!!)
I’ve been a year away from using my last Tomoe River notebook and missed it. Glad Blake had this available and came with some blotting paper to alleviate the issue of transference of ink to the prior or next page. Well done Blake and thanks.
The Tomoe River Hardcover notebook takes the best part of companies like Moleskine and Leuchtturm (the hardcover with the elastic band) and combines it with actually good paper in Tomoe River. Will be buying more in the future
It is always tricky to find the perfect book for my Morning Pages journal. Since I write with a fountain pen, I insist on the perfect paper, which these days is Tomoe River 52gsm. Lines, squares and dots are all anathema: it must be blank. The Paper Mind’s book is proving to be pretty much ideal with a stiff cover and a ribbon to keep my place. I don’t LOVE the (classic) blotting paper since it is a little sticky and fussy to remove from the book to use, but it’s ok. I ordered two books and am likely to order more when I have finished these. In addition to its quality, the price was right!
Really enjoying this for journaling and sketching with fountain pens and inks. I like that it stays pretty flat and I don't need to clip it open. The guide sheet is perfect when I want to write paragraphs and the blotter is a nice touch--really useful after ink swatching. Glad to find a hardbound, fountain-pen friendly notebook that doesn't force me to use a grid.
